Weddings and anniversaries
I’ve never really understood the concept of marriage, much less the idea of a wedding.
I mean, I get it conceptually. One person to hold from this day forward, forever. But I’m not convinced the construct of marriage is the best way to assure that commitment.
For example: Does taking your vows in front of others make people take those vows more seriously?
Our recent divorce rate suggests otherwise.
But are people who take their vows seriously more likely to stay together? Probably.
And so, maybe, we should honor the process and not the inauguration. Make weddings simple and fast and cheap and private—and celebrate the big wins, the dramatic milestones, and the job well done instead.
Because, marriage ain’t no movie. It takes time.
