To paraphrase Ann Lamott:

'Metaphors work by framing the unknown in terms of the known.'

To use whatever resonates. Whatever works.

It’s not that these comparisons are literal or real. (They’re certainly not.)

It’s that we are bred to understand with story. To feel through images. And to see through patterns.
