Hiring for the 51%
Danny Meyer evaluates new applicants at his restaurants by a) looking for technical prowess, and b) looking for emotional and moral intelligence.
He says the best hires have 49% of the former and 51% of the latter.
Because, of course, you can always train for know-how. But it’s much more difficult to instill empathy, responsibility, and integrity (or suppress their opposites).
Without a doubt, hard skills matter. It’s just real skills matter even more.
