The irony in being told who to follow is that leadership isn’t about demanding that people take action, agree with you, or to do things your way.
Genuine leadership (as opposed to management) is your ability to influence, motivate, and enable the people around you to work with you toward a shared goal.
“I require you to…” is a lot different than asking politely (without authority), and helping people understand how your proposed initiative helps them too.
And encouraging people to do their part by setting the example yourself is vastly dissimilar to barking orders.
Without a doubt, you earn a following. You can’t force it.
