Entitled to your beliefs
Everyone is entitled to the beliefs they hold about the world. We have the freedom to think and act as we want, and, if we wish, to be completely ignorant and disinterested of the viewpoints of others.
That being said, by that same logic, you’re entitled just as much to the world you create by holding those views. As well as the world the rest of the world creates by adopting your own.
Consider, for example, a few of the beliefs people have had about wearing face masks during the present pandemic:
Wearing face masks is a violation of our rights.
Wearing face masks doesn’t work.
Wearing face masks is evil.
Wearing face masks is a nice thing to do, because it keeps people (you, me, the public) safe.
The way I see it, if you believe wholeheartedly that masks are a waste (and therefore choose not to wear one in public), so be it. You're not hurting anyone, or so you think.
But by that same logic, if you get sick because everyone else suddenly stopped wearing a mask tomorrow (the result of everyone adopting your views), you can't complain that no one's wearing masks. Moreover, if you later decide you should wear a mask but you've spent 6 months not wearing one, you can't presume someone else should because you've now decided it's a good idea.
On the other hand, when you adopt the idea that face masks are largely about protecting others (not about you), and you realize that there's no harm in wearing one (because there isn't), you suddenly see a lot of kind, responsible, and caring people while out in public. (Not a bad point of view.) And, if we somehow find out they're not effective, well, no harm no foul (because you're not hurting anyone).
Point is, precautions aren't just the right thing to do or the safe thing to do. They're the logical to do.
