Creativity myths are bad juju
I think a lot of artists and would-be artists and people who don’t consider themselves artists mistakenly believe that "creative types" rely on a muse or some spiritual element or a family gene that gives them the raw ability to make art.
I'm not buying it.
There's nothing transcendental or genetic about creativity.
I believe every successful creative has a process. One that uniquely works for them.
Or that you can draw inspiration and ideas from a wide variety of sources and experiences.
But saying you can’t create something original because you’re “not a creative person" or because you don’t “feel inspired,”— that’s a profound form of self-sabotage.
As Elizabeth Gilbert wisely acknowledges, “No four-year-old boy has ever sat in front of a pile of Legos and said, “I don’t know, I’m just — I’m not feeling it.”
Recognizing that it’s merely an unfounded opinion is the first step in discovering your capable of making something magical instead.
