Amplify the positive
Too often, in performance reviews and self-assessment alike, we focus on what’s wrong. Instead of discussing what’s working (or what’s worked before) we talk about and emphasize the opposite.
What we should do is say, “tell me about a time you were early to work?” or “tell me about a time you made a great impression or closed a sale or stayed calm under pressure…” or “what are you doing now that’s working?”
Starting from a place where people can feel good about themselves and where success seems possible is a significantly better route to self-reflection and growth than starting and ending on a low point.
A better approach: Highlight the (small) wins. Discover how to repeat them.
