A process for efficient copywriting
Do a ton of research (both on the client, their industry, their competitors, and how they want their copy to read and feel). On-boarding questionnaires really help with this.
Do a web search for whatever it is you’re writing about. Browse every page you visit looking for ‘good content’ you can ‘steal’ for your copy. (While you’re at it, be sure to save each page to your bookmarking app of choice—I use Pocket—in case you need to go back for more).
Copy and paste all the content you need to your word doc to meet your word count, and put each paragraph in an order that makes the most sense for your readers.
Add original copy to connect the paragraphs together, while paraphrasing/rewriting the ‘stolen paragraphs’ so that they are original and align with the ‘voice’ and ‘style’ of the client.
That said, much of what writing is is basically: a) stealing ideas from people who know more about what your topic is than you do b) finding ways to connect those disjointed ideas c) paraphrasing that content, and d) filling in the gaps with your own intuitive wit.
The last step is to ensure that ‘everything flows’…which is as difficult to explain as it is to master, but if you ‘write like how you talk’ and write often, you’ll inevitably figure it out. It’s not rocket science.
