50,000 miles
Fifty-thousand miles on your odometer is a good indicator that you’ve driven your car past the point of proficiency.
That you know where all the buttons are and what they do. As well as how to inflate your tires, change your wipers and update the fluids.
You also know how it feels to drive your car. You know about all the drive settings from power to eco to B-mode. You know how to coast. You can (probably) drive it better than any of your friends.
Point is, fifty-thousand is a good metric to know if you know what you’re doing. That you’ve committed yourself long enough to the process of learning how to drive your car well.
How come we don’t apply the same concept to other obligations?
You’re not committing to exercising more. You’re committing to 60 workouts, or 600.
You’re not committing to a profession. You’re committing to five to ten thousands hours of learning how to do something better.
And a successful relationship? It’s not really the person you’re committing to.
It’s time spent together…for better or for worse…from this day forward until death do us part.
